Knights in Progress start the new year with Mentor Training

Knights in Progress Mentor Training 2017

Knights in Progress attended mentor training and a team building workshop at UCI which entailed obstacle courses, high rope activities, trust exercises, and mentor training. The new mentors bonded as a group as they had to rely on each other to complete both physical and mental tasks. Advisor, Jeff Bonds, Julie McGinis, and John Emaguna then reviewed the responsibilities and confidentiality requirements for Knights in Progress. The mentors will be matched up with their freshmen mentees at the end of the month. It is going to be a great group of student participants and we are excited about the positive outcomes of this year’s student mentoring program.

Knights in Progress Students

Knights in Progress Students work alongside of Mr. Wager’s special day class students making cookies at lunchtime.  Knights in Progress mentor Isabel Veeris organized the activities and frequently volunteers with Mr. Wager’s lunch club.  The two groups of students had a great time and plans were made to continue the partnership next year.

“Every 15 Minutes”

Junior and Senior students witnessed “Every 15 Minutes” a two-day program which challenges them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends and others.

This powerful program brings together a broad coalition of local agencies with the goal of reducing alcohol-related incidents among youth.

22 students were pulled out of class, one every 15 minutes, as mock drunk-driving fatalities, representing real accidents that occur every 15 minutes.

A simulated drunk driving collision gave students a better understanding of the dangers of drinking and driving. Emergency medical responders transported the critically injured patients to a local trauma center via helicopter and ambulance where doctors simulated attempts to save their lives. The student who died on-scene was placed in a body bag by the coroner.  The student, designated as the drunk driver, was given a field sobriety test and arrested for driving under the influence.
