College and Career Pathways

School to College Pathways

Beginning with the 2014-15 school year students will have the opportunity to earn a “Pathway Cord” to wear at graduation.  The goal of the pathways is to give students opportunities to take courses that will give them the knowledge and skills in a specific area that can be carried forward to college and/or a career.

To earn a “Pathway Cord” to wear at graduation, a student must complete all the requirements outlined below.

  1. Complete three courses within a selected area of study or “Pathway.” These courses should be taken in sequence as outlined in each pathway.  These three pathway courses must be completed with a grade of “B” or higher in order to count toward pathway completion.
  2. “Pathway Cords” are only awarded to students graduating with a 2.0 Cumulative GPA or higher and maintain satisfactory citizenship throughout high school.
  3. A student must complete ten hours of job shadowing in an industry closely aligned to their chosen pathway. These hours should be done at a business site and must be documented and confirmed by a supervisor at that site.  Career speakers, college visits, summer camps, and pathway-related field trips provided by the school will count toward these hours, but only with prior approval from the College and Career Counselor or your Academic Counselor.
  4. A student must complete a portfolio outlining their pathway experience. This may be submitted via PowerPoint, Prezi, or hosted on a private website.  All portfolios are turned into the College and Career Center Counselor and must contain:
    1. A slide containing the information from the Pathway Cord checklist.
    2. A slide with a summary of courses completed within a Pathway
    3. A description of the job shadowing experience/internship completed. The description must include the signature of the experience/internship supervisor.
    4. Evidence of a completed life skills assessment and/or interest inventory (Can be from Shmoop.com, Naviance or other approved site.)
    5. A professional resume
    6. A postsecondary education plan
